Boosting social activity

According to a recent study of people over 70, maintaining social activity is an important part of preserving mental skills.

However, thousands of UK residents seem to have been aware of the importance of interaction. For decades, people across England, Scotland and Wales have been spending time with elderly residents who have great difficulty leaving their homes on their own.

For example, since 1965 the charity Contact the Elderly has built relationships between home-bound elderly pensioners and younger volunteers with cars or who are willing to host tea parties. Today, approximately 4,500 people across the UK volunteer with the organisation.

Other charities that help boost regular social activity between the elderly and younger generations include Help the Aged, Age Concern, Father Hudson’s Society, North Staffs Carers Association, Nugent Care, Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation, The Anchor Society and Disability Direct.
